Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival and Otsukimi (Moon Viewing) in Japan

In just over a week, the full moon of the eighth lunar month—the most beautiful moonlit night of the year—will arrive. This is the time when both Vietnam and Japan turn their attention to the moon, but in their own distinct ways.

In Vietnam, the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) is celebrated as the Children's Festival, a bustling and vibrant holiday. Familiar sights include energetic Lion Dances, children parading with bright lanterns, and sweet, rich Mooncakes.

Meanwhile, in Japan, Otsukimi (お月見 - Moon Viewing) is a more refined and tranquil occasion. This festival originated as a way to give thanks for the autumn harvest. Japanese people express their gratitude by decorating with Susuki grass (pampas grass) and enjoying Tsukimi Dango (round rice dumplings) under the moonlight.

Though they differ in form—one being lively and colorful, the other peaceful and profound—both festivals are beautiful testaments to the Asian culture of appreciating the full moon and valuing family and community bonds.
